TODAY IS HS PHOTO DAY! Do what YOU can to make sure everyone gets their photo taken today in the HS Commons.

Alexandra, Amelia, Sunny and Andrew continue working on your layouts. When you finish, call me over to check it out. I’ll be around to check in with everyone else.

Term for the Day: Dominant Photo – a photo placed in your layout that is 3-5 times larger than all other photos in the layout.

Greetings yearbookers and welcome to our first extended class. Old-timers are forging ahead on the yearbook and new-timers will be focusing in on beginning layout. MOST IMPORTANT – I haven’t had any word yet on whether the book will arrive this week or not, but if by chance it does arrive, please be prepared to help out after school distributing to HS students on the day it rolls in. I will put out an APB when it is on its way. Check your email for updates!

ALSO – Thursday is HS Photo Day! Remind everyone to have their photo taken in the HS Commons.

Oh yes – check out the new link under linky dinks called “A different kind of yearbook”.  Food for thought.

Term for the Day: Eyeline – A continuous line of white space across a layout that draws the reader’s eye across the page.

No need to check the wikis for assignments today. We are going to review Indesign as a class. Please take note of the new link to InDesign FAQs under Linky Dinks. You will find answers to many of your InDesign questions here, as well as some interesting and useful InDesign tips and tricks. Go ahead and open up InDesign. It will take few moments for it to load.

Term for the Day: Folio – simply put, is the page number (sometimes combined with a reader reference). The folio is usually placed in the bottom margin of each page, but it doesn’t have to be at the bottom. As you are flipping through books and magazines take note of how the folio is handled. You will find examples of folios on the sides and at the top of pages. The folio in our yearbook includes the page number, the title of the section and usually some graphic treatment that relates to the theme.

Term for the Day #2: I neglected to put a term in for last class so today you get 2 terms! The second term is PICA.

pi·ca  (pk)n.

1. a. A printer’s unit of type size, equal to 12 points or about 1/6 of an inch.
b. An equivalent unit of composition measurement used in determining the dimensions of lines, illustrations, or printed pages.

Thanks to all who helped coordinate the senior class photo. Hands down the most cooperative class we’ve ever photographed.  We’ll continue on today with individual assignments.  Next week we’ll begin training on Indesign and then we’ll move on to layout. Keeping our travel journal theme in mind, be on the lookout in magazines and periodicals for interesting headline treatments and layouts. Bring all your ideas to class and put them in the idea folder.

We have three classes next week. Then the next week is retreat week for sophomores and freshmen. Supposedly the yearbooks are set to ship at the end of next week. As soon as I get the word, we’ll review distribution procedures at the end of class today.

Class 3… The main focus today will be on font selection and seniors. We will be installing all the fonts on all of the yearbook computers. If you have an assignment that involves working on a computer, be prepared to log-off and let Andrew do the installation. It shouldn’t take too long. Don’t forget to leave a status report on the wiki before you leave class. Thanks!

Term for the Day: DPS is an acronym for Double-Page Spread which refers to a layout designed on 2 facing pages. With few exceptions each of our layouts are designed on a DPS. In yearbook we eat, dream, and sleep in double page spreads!

Class 2… We’re off and running!

There is some immediate business to take care of that we need to address before moving ahead to work on layout and learning InDesign CS3. Check your wiki page for today’s assignment, then come to the table and we’ll review it before you begin.

DON’T FORGET!!  At the end of class, leave a status report (what you accomplished today) on your wiki. If you need to leave me a note (a reminder or a question), enter it on my wiki page.
